Melt – Kings Cross

Melt bar in Kings Cross
After just one glance in my direction my heart starts racing, my imagination runs wild, I feel a little hot and I sip on my mojito to cool down. I’m in the offbeat surrounds of Melt, amongst its leather sofas, exposed brick walls (one still has a painted sign warning against bad language, gambling and drinking from a previous tenant) and art deco lamps, and the beautiful blonde who’s icier than my cocktail has already redirected her focus away from me even though my breathing hasn’t even had time to return to normal.

Melt is an odd cross between a bar and a club but, to its credit, it never feels as pretentious as most Sydney clubs. There’s often live music acts and I’ve seen jazz bands and DJs play there and they also often have pop and post punk disco nights. It also now has a 5am license and there’s no 2 or 3am lockout.

To be honest, however, what I really like about Melt is its offbeat décor. The main room that has the dance floor and stage looks like a 1950s beatnik’s warehouse loungeroom and the room leading up to it is filled with chesterfield sofas and quirky paintings. They’ve also set up a mini bar on a mezzanine level plus there’s a balcony for smokers.

Being on their mailing list, I received an email saying they would have $8 cocktails tonight (and when you drink as many cocktails as I do, an $8 cocktail is especially appealing). However, when I turned up at the bar I was charged $15 instead – it turns out it’s $8 if you buy two cocktails at a time (no-one likes happy hour more than me, but let’s call a spade a spade – if it’s two for one, then say so). I also suspect that $8 x 2 = $16, but maybe I should stop being so pedantic.

I have to say the service is brusque at best (although I have had great service here before) and the mojito could be better – the lime is in slices and should have been muddled more, plus I don’t think a mojito should be layered with ice and soda water. However, for all that the mojito is certainly decent – especially after I get through the top layer of soda water – and by the time I finish it I definitely wish I’d ordered a second one.

Since I didn’t, however, I order a beer and hope the ice maiden will melt for me but, despite fluttering my eyelashes at her for another hour, she manages to resist my charms. Still, ice-maiden and mojito aside, Melt is one of my favourite bars in the Cross thanks to its hip, fun and laid back atmosphere.

Now it’s your turn – how do you rate Melt?
